Automatic Cartoning Machine Maintenance & Common Troubleshooting Guide

2026-10-13 admin 6

For packaging manufacturers running automatic cartoning machines, unexpected downtime caused by machine faults directly cuts production efficiency and increases operating costs. Even high-quality automatic cartoners require regular maintenance to maintain stable running performance. This guide shares a complete maintenance checklist and practical troubleshooting solutions for the most frequent failures, helping operators and production managers reduce machine breakdowns and extend equipment lifespan.

Daily Maintenance (Per Shift) Before any cleaning or inspection work, cut off the power supply and air source for safety. Clean the carton magazine, vacuum suction cups, folding guides and product feeding channels. Remove paper dust, glue residue and debris left during production. Inspect all sensors to ensure no blockage. Check air pressure and confirm there is no air leakage in pneumatic pipelines. Wipe the HMI control screen and verify all alarm functions work normally. You can learn more about machine structure from our previous article Common Types of Automatic Cartoning Machines & Their Suitable Applications.

Weekly Maintenance Lubricate chain, bearing and moving parts according to the machine manual. Tighten loose screws and fasteners on conveyor and forming stations. Inspect the wear degree of vacuum cups, belts and pushers. Check glue spraying system, clean glue nozzles to prevent clogging. Test carton flap folding and sealing performance, adjust guides if carton position is offset.

Monthly Maintenance Carry out a full inspection of servo motors, reducers and transmission systems. Check all electrical wiring for aging or loose connection. Calibrate sensors and timing parameters of each working station. Clean internal dust of electrical cabinet and ventilation fan. Run an empty machine test to check the whole cycle synchronization.

Common Faults & Troubleshooting

1. Carton feeding failure / cannot pick cartons: The main reasons are worn vacuum cups, messy stacked cartons or insufficient air pressure. Solutions: Replace damaged suction cups, reload cartons neatly and adjust air pressure to the standard range.

2. Carton jam during forming: Caused by poor carton quality, misaligned folding guides or wrong size setting. Solutions: Check carton material, adjust guide position and reset carton size parameters on HMI.

3. Product insertion skew or stuck: Check upstream conveyor alignment and pusher timing. Adjust pusher stroke to match carton depth.

4. Poor sealing or carton flap cannot fold: Clean glue nozzle, check glue temperature, inspect folding plates for wear. Replace worn folding components if needed.

5. Machine frequent false alarm: Check blocked sensors, loose signal cables and unstable air supply. Clean sensor surface and reconnect loose wiring.

Preventive Tips Most sudden machine stops come from insufficient daily cleaning and irregular inspection. Build a fixed maintenance log to record inspection time, replaced spare parts and fault records. Train operators to follow standard operating procedures. Regular maintenance not only lowers repair costs but also protects your long-term packaging production.
